Is water damaged laptop repairable?

Often Yes. If you want to know a number, I’d say 70 – 80% Yes, other times No.

It varies because water leaks from one place to another, and no one spill water in the same way as another hence it’s unpredictable.

Make, model of the laptop, spare part availability also affect possibility of repairing the laptop. It’s not just the damages caused by water.

We’ve managed to repair laptops that were left in the rain, soaked in water.

And we were also unable to repair laptops that we were told it had “very little water”.

Is water damaged laptop worth repairing?

Repairing computer has a number of benefits over than buying a new one, because:

  • Cost for repairs is always cheaper than buying new.
  • You can keep your existing software license.
  • You can avoid hidden costs of buying new computer (purchase of new software license such as Microsoft Word, Excel, antivirus).
  • You can avoid cost of re-setup of computer, printer.
  • Even when you eventually decide to buy a new one, you’ll have a spare computer or you can resell it.
  • A greener planet. Small effort can help reduce the massive e-Waste problem.

Possible problems caused by water liquid spill on laptop

Laptops, including Apple Mac laptops are not designed to come in contact with water.

Your laptop may work for some time before it shows problems. This is common.

Below is problems that water liquid spill may cause:

  • Laptop does not turn on at all. When this happen, it is most likely that it will need professional repairs.
  • Freezing problem. Not responding. Not opening apps. Mouse clicking does not respond.
  • Laptop may become very slow, taking a long time to start up and to open apps, documents.
  • Blank grey screen at startup and does not boot to Windows or macOS.
  • Laptop does not boot, showing a folder icon with a question mark, or a circle with a slash through.
  • Windows or macOS does not boot. You see a loading bar when the computer starts, it takes a long time then freezes or turns off itself.
  • Laptop does not charge. The charger light may come or may not come in.
  • Laptop turns off itself, blacks out and shut down without warning.
  • Keyboard keys are sticky, not responding or jammed. This is typical when sugary drink was spilt onto keyboard.
  • Touchpad (aka trackpad) cursor does not move properly, it may jump around, or clicking / opening apps randomly.
  • Loud noise from laptop. The fan appears to be running at full speed all the time.
  • Shift key is always engaged or stuck. All letters become caps letters when you type.
  • Keyboard issues: you type a letter, but there’s no output or it outputs random characters.
  • Apple Hardware Test reports “There may be an issue with the System Management Controller (SMC)” error.
  • An error message shows “Your computer has restarted from a problem…” at startup.
  • An error message shows “No bootable device” at startup.
  • Wireless in laptop does not work. It remains disabled and you cannot enable it. Or it may not detect any wireless network in the area.
  • Battery in laptop does not hold charge for long. It may only last for minutes, or suddenly turns off even though it has some charge left.
  • Battery in laptop has stopped working completely. The laptop needs to be plugged in with its charger to work. If you unplug the charger, the laptop turns off immediately.
  • Battery in laptop shows “Service battery” message, or “Replace soon”, or “Replace now”.
  • Watermark behind screen.
  • Both keyboard and touchpad in laptop stop working altogether.
  • Smoke, burn smell comes out from laptop.

Water liquid spill is unpredictable because it leaks from one place to another. More than one component may be damaged.

Why my laptop worked then stopped working?

This is common. Because, water leaks from one place to another.

As you continue to use the laptop, remaining liquid residue inside becomes runny as the laptop heats up. The water then leaked to other electrical components and short the components.

Sugary drink also leaves behind sticky residue. After your laptop heats up, the leftover sticky liquid becomes runny and starts to leak, damaging components inside the laptop.

What manufacturers can and cannot help you with

Manufacturers will provide certain repairs for your laptop. However, the fact is, manufacturers only fix a limited number of issues on your laptop:

  • Restore your laptop back to factory settings, which means all data will be wiped out.
  • Replace screen for your laptops.
  • Replace battery for your laptops.
  • Replace defective parts that are covered by a recall program.
  • Replace damaged parts under certain conditions (eg not damaged by water spill).

For good reasons, manufacturers (Apple stores included) will not do the followings:

  • Repair liquid spill damaged computers
  • Repair old, “vintage” computer models (4 or 5+ year old computers)
  • Fix sticky keyboard key problem
  • Manual removal of virus and spyware
  • Back up or recover your data.
  • Upgrade your computers to make it run faster.
  • Repair on laptops that had been repaired previously by a third-party technician.

It’s not that manufacturers don’t want to be helpful and fix the above problems. All manufacturers do not provide such services. It’s not possible for them to do so, for many reasons.

Don’t waste your time seeking help from manufacturers for the above.

It is likely that they will encourage you to purchase a new computer.

Unlike manufacturers, local computer repairers will repair what manufacturers can, plus the things that manufacturers cannot repair for you.

Because, it is in those third-party local computer repairers’ best interests to repair your laptop. It is within their expertise and is their main business to do so (they are not retailers nor manufacturers).

Repairs at a local computer shop often will cost you less than at manufacturers as well.

Each Microsoft store, Apple store is crowded with their employees, high overheads. Thus, it’s impossible to get your laptop repaired with them cheaply.

Local computer repair stores also have much lower overheads hence they can provide repairs at a much lower price point.

How much does it cost to repair my water damaged laptop?

The price varies depending the type of repair, make and model of your laptop. There is no ball-park figure nor one-size-fit-all.

And, because water damages are unpredictable and varies widely, it is impossible to put a price here.

You will find that most (if not all) computer repairers, including manufacturers, cannot give quotes without first checking your computer.

This is common for many reasons:

  • No companies employ 100% technicians. Phone calls may be answered by reception, or non-technical staff.
  • Inconsistent prices: prices change as suppliers change prices, market price changes.
  • Any prices without written form cannot be tracked.
  • Giving prices without seeing the computer often leads to incorrect prices and unhappy customer experience.
  • It will take significant time to diagnose and quote over the phone. The repair technicians need to focus on doing repairs instead of answering phone calls.

The price varies so much $150-$1,000+ that it’s not any useful to mention here.

As a general rule, the more expensive your computer is, the more expensive it may cost to fix.

An Apple MacBook Pro Retina  display laptop is a premium laptop, which costs more to repair because due to more expensive spare part cost.

How long does it take to repair my water damaged laptop?

This varies depending on the problem, spare part availability and which computer repairer you use.

Same day repairs for water damaged laptop might be possible but often not because parts may need to be ordered in.

For our store – Safemode Computer Service, turn-around time is typically same day, next day, or 3-5 business days, or sometimes longer for major repairs.

Generally after you’ve approved our quote, we will commence the work immediately.

Repairing computers often requires spare parts. While most computer repairers will stock common parts to facilitate repair process, it’s not possible to have all parts in stock.

If a part needs to be ordered in, standard delivery time is 2-5 business days within Australia (subject to stock availability at suppliers).

Also, given that your laptop had water spill, it should have at least 48 hours to dry out after it’s taken apart.

Data backup, or data recovery process is time consuming, which affects turn-around time. Having backup of your data helps reduce turn-around time for repairs.

* Business days are Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

What’s involved in a liquid spill damage laptop repair process?

To put this simple, a liquid spill damage laptop repair process involves identifying and replacing part(s) that were damaged by liquid inside the computer.

“Cleaning” will not fix it. Liquid causes instant short circuit, burn damages to electrical components. There is no way to undo this.

Your data may be at risk. It’s recommended to keep regular backup of your data to prevent data loss when your computer breaks down.

Liquid spill damage laptop repairs could be difficult

Not always, but sometimes it’s difficult to repair water damaged laptops.

Because, the water damages vary and not always the same components are damaged.

There is no one-fix-for-all and there is no one-price-for-all.

It’s harder to diagnose the laptop when the it fails to turn on after liquid damages occurred.

There is no way to test every single components inside your laptop to see what needs fixing, simply because there is no tool to test everything.

Many tools also require the laptop to be operational to run.

Though not often, you may need to accept some minor compromises after your laptop is fixed (eg one of your USB ports may not work at all as it had suffered permanent damages from the water spill).

A common repairs on liquid spill damaged laptops is keyboard replacement. The keyboard is one that comes in direct contact with water spill and will be the first one that malfunction.

In the guide below, we explain the process of replacing keyboard for a HP 15-ay laptop after it had liquid spill damages that caused some of the keys to stop working.

Replacing the keyboard unit sounds simple itself but this repairs is actually quite a difficult process with most new laptops because of the way they are designed to be thinner and more portable over the years.

HP 15-ay laptop keyboard repairs

In this example, we will show you how to replace keyboard in a HP 15-ay keyboard laptop.

Replacing keyboard is a common laptop repairs because laptop are prone to liquid spill, moisture damage, dust and rust from exterior.

If your laptop keyboard has problems with its keys, for example: some of the keys are not working, pressing the keys do not output the characters that they are meant to, or some keys are jammed, then it is time to replace your laptop keyboard.

However it is important to understand that while most keyboard problem can be fixed by replacing the keyboard, the problem could potentially turn out to be a motherboard fault instead.

The keyboard itself is connected to the motherboard via a flex cable, input to the keyboard is indeed processed by the motherboard which then send data to display output onto the screen

In some instances, it is the motherboard that failed to process input from the keyboard correctly instead.

Unfortunately there is no tools for you to test this, the only way to find out is to actually try it out with a new working keyboard to see if the issue is resolved.

This HP 15 is a typical example of how newer laptops are designed – its keyboard is integrated onto the laptop upper frame (palm rest and keyboard upper frame unit).

A few years ago, this was not a common design in most laptops and keyboard was much easier to be replaced back then.

Since laptops are now getting thinner and more sleek, this new design is common to reduce the size of laptops and improve portability by sacrificing their repairability.

Let’s start repairing this laptop keyboard.

First, turn the laptop off and flip it around.

HP 15-ay laptop keyboard replacement

Remove all philip screw that you can find here. Make sure to remove the battery and remove 2 screws under the battery.

There are also 2 hidden screws under 2 rubber feet at top corners that you must take them out.

Once you have removed all the screws, use a flat tool to pry up the bottom cover to reveal internal parts. In the photo below, hard drive and DVD drive were already removed.

As we explained earlier, this HP laptop is designed to have its keyboard buried underneath everything else inside this laptop.

To get to the keyboard, you will need to remove almost every part you see here to get to it, namely fan, motherboard together with heatsink, hard drive, DVD drive, WiFi card, screen cable, WiFi cables.

If you do not have any prior experience with a similar repairs, we suggest that you stop here and take it to a professional technician to repair your laptop.

Chance is you will never make a good DIY repairs with replacing the keyboard on your own.

If you are keen on continuing your DIY repairs, read on.

Remove the fan from the laptop.

and WiFi card.

Disconnect all cables that you can see near the WiFi card. These are screen LVDS cable, WiFi antenna cables, DC jack cable, power switch button cable.

Remove a few screws that hold down the motherboard from the frame, then you will be able to gently lift up the motherboard and remove it.

Then a small DVD connector board needs to be removed.

You’re almost there. Now you are looking at a metal plate that helps holding down the keyboard to the upper frame unit. This metal plate is integrated into the upper frame.

There is no screws holding it, just plastic rivets that secured it down. Use a flat tool to gently pry up this metal plate without bending it too much (do not bend it, you will need it to be straight later on to install new keyboard).

There is your old broken laptop keyboard. It’s fairly easy to take it out here.

Hold on a second! Removing the old keyboard was not so easy, but it is even harder to install the new one.

Yes, you heard it right.

The new keyboard cannot be secured to the upper frame because the metal plate was originally secured to the frame by plastic rivets, and you have already removed all of those plastic rivets which can no longer be put back.

Without these rivets, the new keyboard will simply be floating loosely inside the frame.

Ideally you will need a machine to put new plastic rivets in. It is not easy to have access to these machine at home for a DIY job.

An alternative, cheap method is to use double sided tape and super glue, however you will have to be extremely careful with using these as you may permanently damage the new keyboard.

To make it worse, you may end up going through all of these hassles and end up with the same problem because the problem may turn out to be a motherboard fault instead (as we explained above).

Either way, it will be a fun experience (or a total headache) repairing this HP laptop.
