The Challenge
The customer brought in a 2011 Apple MacBook Pro that had been dropped and was now randomly freezing, making it completely unusable. Despite its age, the laptop stored over 5 years of irreplaceable iMovie and iPhoto data — videos, photos, and personal projects he couldn’t afford to lose.
He first went to the Apple Store, but they wouldn’t work on it — too old, “vintage” status. He then had another technician attempt a fix, but unfortunately, it made things worse.
The laptop was now in critical condition — but the data still had to be saved.
The Process
The MacBook arrived at our workshop in the afternoon. We immediately performed a full diagnostic scan and identified not one, but three separate issues:
- Damaged internal drive connection
- Loose memory module
- Failing fan causing thermal issues
Thanks to our experience with vintage Apple models, we were able to isolate the root causes within 10 minutes.
Here’s what we did next:
- Stabilised the internal components and secured all physical connectors.
- Repaired the fan and cleaned out the cooling system.
- Backed up and successfully recovered all user data — including iMovie libraries and iPhoto archives.
- Fully restored macOS and returned the laptop to a stable working state.
The laptop was fixed and ready for pickup the next morning — just under 24 hours later.
The Result
The Wi-Fi was restored, iCloud was logged in, and all the photos were ready for backup — no data lost, no external drives needed. A job that others may have written off, we turned around in just a few hours.
