The Challenge
This HP Envy x360 13-ay laptop has damage on one of its hinges that caused the hinge to be detached from the screen back cover.
Since the hinge is no longer held firmly to the back cover, it came out of the casing and became exposed.
In some laptops, the hinge may also cause cracks on the screen.
The screen is slim, fragile and easy to break. Removing the front screen without breaking it is a challenge on its own.
The customer has contacted several other repair stores including HP but she could not find a satisfactory prompt solution. The repair cost would be over $500 with parts to be ordered which would take a few weeks.
Below are some sample photos of similar hinge damages on HP laptop that we’ve seen.

The Process
We first noticed an issue with the laptop’s touch function as it wasn’t working. Our technician fixed the touchscreen problem first before working further on the hinge.
After fixing the touchscreen problem, with great care, we managed to remove the front screen without damaging it. We removed the screen from its frame, then we removed broken pieces from the hinge.
Plastic is not as durable as metal. We re-secured the hinge back to its back cover using bolts and nuts which are stronger than plastic. This ensures a much more durable hinge for the laptop.
The Result
While “cheaper” is not always better, we have managed to offer a cheaper, faster, better solution for the customer in this case.
