Service Description
Accidentally deleted important files? Is your iMac stuck on a loading screen or showing a flashing folder with a question mark? Whether your iMac won’t boot, your internal drive has failed, or you’ve lost access to files — we’re here to help recover your data.
Data loss can happen for many reasons: corrupted hard drives or flash drives, accidental deletion, failed macOS updates, liquid damage, or hardware failure. In some cases, the iMac powers on but the files are missing or the drive won’t mount.
At Safemode, we offer expert data recovery services for all iMac models — including both traditional hard drives and solid-state drives.
Pricing Breakdown
Typical cost for data recovery from an Apple iMac ranges from $200 to $350, depending on the condition of the drive and how much data needs to be recovered.
Here’s how the pricing generally breaks down:
-
$200–$250 → For iMacs where the drive is still healthy or only mildly corrupted. This includes situations where macOS isn’t booting but the data can still be accessed using recovery tools.
-
$300–$350+ → For failed hard drives or flash storage that require deeper-level recovery methods. This includes:
-
Drives that don’t mount
-
Failed sectors or partition issues
-
Drives removed from the logic board for access (e.g. in newer iMacs with blade SSDs)
- Fusion drives.
-
- $450+ → For recovery from 4TB+ drives, or other severely damaged drives.
What affects the cost:
- Drive health and readability
- Whether the drive is a traditional HDD, blade SSD, or Fusion Drive
- Total amount of data and file organisation
- Whether encryption (e.g. FileVault or T2 security) is enabled
- Need for data transfer to a new storage device (external drive sold separately)
➡ If the hard drive or flash drive in your iMac has failed, the cost is more likely to be around $350 due to the increased effort and technical steps needed to extract data.
In Apple iMac newer models with SSDs that are soldered onto the logic board, repairing the logic board is the only option to recover your data. See our Apple iMac logic board repair for more information.
Our Process
- Initial Assessment – We check whether your iMac’s drive is accessible and whether the issue is software-related or physical drive failure.
- Drive Imaging (if possible) – If the drive is readable, we clone it to a secure working environment to avoid further damage during recovery.
- File Recovery – We use professional data recovery tools to scan for lost, deleted, or inaccessible files — including support for HFS+, APFS, and encrypted volumes.
- Data Transfer – We return your recovered files on an external drive, USB, or migrate them directly to your repaired or new Mac — based on your preference.
The Technical Stuff
iMac data recovery depends on several key factors:
- Drive type – Older iMacs use SATA HDDs; newer models use SSDs or Fusion Drives.
- Fusion Drive recovery – Requires special care, as data is split between a hard drive and SSD.
- Apple Silicon iMacs – Have soldered SSDs and encryption tied to the logic board, requiring board-level access.
- T2 chip encryption – On Intel iMacs, drives may be encrypted at the hardware level — data recovery requires the board and valid Apple ID credentials.
- APFS file system – We support recovery from Apple’s modern file systems, which are more secure but also more complex to work with.
- Even if your data is less than the total storage capacity of the drive, recovery tools will still scan the entire drive for any recoverable data. Thus, the bigger the drive, the longer it will take. Recovery tools cannot differentiate what data is important to you. It will scan for all recoverable data, including ones that you might not need.
We assess recovery possibilities and explain your options clearly before starting.
