Service Description
Is your desktop computer running slow, freezing, or stuck on the loading screen? It could be a failing or full hard drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD). These issues are common in older PCs, and over time they can stop your computer from booting or saving files properly.
Common signs of a faulty drive include extremely slow performance, crashing during startup, missing files, or hearing clicking or buzzing noises from inside the case. Sometimes your PC won’t detect the drive at all.
At Safemode, we replace faulty or outdated hard drives and SSDs with fast, reliable storage. We’ll also reinstall Windows and try to recover your data if the old drive is still accessible.
PC desktop computer hard drive or SSD replacement starts from $250 to $300+, depending on the drive type and capacity.
Pricing Breakdown
Notice: due to excessive AI center demand, costs for RAMs, SSDs have skyrocketed. Add $100-$150+ to the prices below.
The cost of replacing or upgrading a hard drive or SSD in a PC desktop typically depends on the type of drive, storage capacity, and the complexity of the system.
Here’s a general breakdown:
- $250–$300 → For basic SATA SSD or HDD replacements with standard capacities (e.g. 128GB to 512GB). Suitable for everyday desktops used for office tasks, school, or general home use.
- $300–$350 → For upgrades to larger 1TB SSDs, or hybrid drive setups (HDD + SSD). These provide more storage and faster boot times for heavier workloads.
- $350-$550+ → For gaming desktops or high-performance setups that require:
-
High-speed NVMe SSDs with PCIe Gen 4 or Gen 5 support
-
Multiple drive configurations (RAID setups or multiple SSDs)
-
High-capacity drives (2TB+ SSDs or enterprise-grade HDDs)
-
More advanced installation and thermal management (heatsinked NVMe slots, tight cable routing, BIOS setup)
-
What affects the cost:
- Type of drive (HDD vs SATA SSD vs NVMe SSD)
- Capacity (higher = more expensive)
- Number of drives being installed
- System layout and accessibility
- OS reinstallation or data transfer services (optional)
➡ Gaming desktops or high-performance systems often require faster, larger, and more complex drive setups — these upgrades typically cost $350+, especially when using top-tier NVMe SSDs or installing multiple drives.
Our Process
- Initial Testing – We run diagnostics to check your drive’s health, confirm if it’s failing, full, or disconnected, and identify any system errors preventing startup.
- Data Backup (if possible) – If the existing drive still works, we attempt to back up your data before moving forward.
- Drive Removal – We remove the faulty or outdated drive from its bay or M.2 slot inside your desktop tower.
- New Drive Installation – We install a suitable replacement — either a high-capacity HDD for general storage, or an SSD for faster speed and performance.
- Windows Setup – We install a fresh copy of Windows and the latest drivers to restore normal functionality.
- Data Restoration & Testing – If your files were backed up, we restore them onto the new drive. We then run tests to confirm the system boots quickly and performs smoothly.
The Technical Stuff
Desktop storage can vary widely depending on your system:
- 3.5″ SATA HDDs – Standard spinning drives used in most desktops.
- 2.5″ SATA SSDs – Great for speed boosts and still widely compatible.
- M.2 NVMe SSDs – Ultra-fast storage that connects directly to the motherboard via PCIe.
- RAID setups – Some systems use RAID for performance or redundancy, requiring special care when replacing drives.
- Power and data connectors – SATA drives require both power and data connections; NVMe drives mount directly.
We make sure the new drive is compatible with your system and set up correctly in BIOS. We also check cooling and power supply to support the new hardware.
Our Difference
Replacing a hard drive isn’t just about swapping parts. We carefully test the system, back up your data (if possible), and configure everything so your PC runs better than before.
We’ve replaced thousands of desktop drives — from standard setups to custom-built gaming towers. Our technicians know how to match the right drive to your needs, whether it’s speed, capacity, or budget.
We use quality parts from trusted suppliers and explain everything clearly before we start. At Safemode, we believe in honest service, reliable repairs, and making sure your desktop performs at its best.
